January can be a big month for people. It can be a time to jump start major ambitions you have had for a while. This could be organizing the storage room or mastering a new skill, like fly fishing or crocheting. Chances are one of your resolutions is to lose weight or eat healthier. You are in good company with 21.4% of Americans! It is a universal desire to be the best version of yourself.

But how do you get past that slump? You know what I am talking about…when the novelty of the New Year wears off and it would just be easier to give up. Here are some tips to keep your New Year’s resolutions going strong! 

Realistic Expectations

With New Year’s resolutions, do not set yourself up to lose. Making realistic goals is key to progress and the level of commitment required. If you only get to the gym every once-in-a-blue-moon, do not expect that you can all of a sudden start going every day. Ease into these expectations and set achievable milestones. You could even break down your goals into phases that allow you to watch your own progress. The more realistic your expectations are, the more likely you are to convince yourself to keep going.

Accountability

In today’s day and age, there are multiple ways to keep someone in the loop about your goals. Most gyms or fitness programs offer a trainer of some sort. These days, you can decide the level of involvement they have and find what works best for you. There are also online communities specifically tailored to keeping users on track with their goals. These communities can be at your fingertips as most programs have corresponding websites or apps that give access to a bunch of like-minded users. Lastly, there’s the old-fashioned “take a friend with you.” Find someone who is willing to go through the process with you in real time. This could be a friend, coworker, or even someone you meet at the gym. The objective here is to broadcast your goals, making it harder to just throw in the towel.

Convenience is Key

Figuring out how to make these New Year’s resolutions fit into your life is essential. Consider using the gym that is near your daily commute on the way to work. If you prefer the privacy of your own home, dedicate some space for your equipment where everything is easily accessible. Research workouts that target multiple major muscle groups that you are looking to improve in a short amount of time. The easier it is to achieve your goals on a daily basis, the easier it is to stay on track and keep your motivation strong.

Make it Fun

Find the aspects of your New Year’s resolutions that you actually enjoy. Maybe go to group exercise classes that explore a new workout that you have always wanted to try. Or create a killer playlist that makes you feel on top of the world. The “Get Fit” New Year’s resolution does not have to be one that makes you groan with frustration. Focus on the parts that excite you and make sure you stay consistent.
